Tax and Accounting Reviewer for MyCPE One
Two openings.
This description is for candidates from MyCPE One only.
Why this role exists
We need someone to oversee these items:
- You review returns, which is the step that decides how fast work reaches a client.
- Work keeps moving whoever is away, because there is more than one reviewer.
- Preparers learn the technical work from you.
Logistics
- The team: You work with mostly people from India, and some from Eastern Europe.
- Hours: Full time, which is eight hours of work and one hour for lunch. You choose one of three shifts.
- Indian time, in the morning: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM in India, which is 10:30 PM to 7:30 AM Austin, Texas time. People on this shift do not talk to clients.
- Indian time, ending at 1:00 PM Austin, Texas time: 2:30 PM to 11:30 PM in India, which is 4:00 AM to 1:00 PM Austin, Texas time.
- Until 4:00 PM Austin, Texas time: 5:30 PM to 2:30 AM in India, which is 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Austin, Texas time.
- Company stage: Small, growing firm with a lean leadership bench.
- Start: Ideally 5 October 2026. You need to pass live interviews first.
- Location: Remote, hired from India, we prefer work from home, and working from an office is fine too.
- Reports to: the Tax and Accounting Lead.
- Direct reports: None. You answer the preparers on technical work, and you review work. You do not contact clients directly. Somebody else on the team does that.
- Video: For internal meetings with the Tax and Accounting team. You do not meet with clients.
- Equipment: Your own. You reach the firm's systems through a remote desktop we give you.
- Contract: The standard one with MyCPE One.
Full time here
You are passionate about your work. Full time here means 8 to 10 hours a day, because you want to see things through to finished.
Who we want here
- Women. We want more of them here.
- Autistic people. The rules are written down. Nobody has to read a room.
- Direct communicators.
- People who think in systems. When something breaks, they look for what caused it instead of fixing only the part they can see.
- People who are optimistic about the outcome when they are under stress or facing a challenge.
- People who move fast and get a lot done.
- People who are all in.
- People who want the company to grow and are excited to help make that happen.
- People who, when they are stressed, notice what they are feeling, then say what they need and write it down. Stopping at the feeling, with nothing written down, is not a fit here.
Who should not apply
This is not the role for you if you:
- Wait for somebody else to pick a thing up, or need the work handed to you tidy and already decided.
- Report a problem and stop there.
- Try somebody once, get no answer, and give up.
- Go quiet when something needs raising, or find telling the truth consistently hard.
- Read hidden meanings and office politics instead of the plain words.
- Overstate what you can do, or are different before you are hired and after.
- Have changed jobs every year or two, or want short projects and a work whenever schedule.
How your results are measured
- You start reviewing every return sent to you within 48 hours.
- Every client tax question gets a drafted reply inside 24 hours. Somebody with the client relationship sends it. Sometimes the reply says you need to investigate or finish the review first.
- Nothing on the tax or accounting side reaches the Interim CEO because a preparer could not reach a reviewer.
- Your time entries are detailed enough that in six months, if a client questions the time, we can read the entry and answer the question. You do not have to remember it, and nobody has to ask you.
What you own
Final review on returns
- Working the first review and second review tasks in our practice software on individual and business returns, as they turn ready.
- Approving it, or sending it back with what to fix and how to fix it.
- While you are new, a second reviewer checks your reviews.
- Amendments, and saying which return has to be corrected before the next one can finish.
- Knowing what has already been reviewed. The record of which returns are done stays straight, so nothing is reviewed twice and nothing is missed.
Preparing, when the line is clear
- When there is nothing waiting to be reviewed and you have the time, you prepare.
- Somebody else reviews anything you prepared. You do not review your own work.
The client's tax question, drafted for somebody else to send
- You draft the answer, worked figures included where the question calls for them. Somebody who has the client relationship sends it.
Teaching the preparer
- Feedback that names the fix and the method, so the same correction is not needed twice.
Your own time entries
- Naming the return and the outcome on every entry.
- Logging the time in real time, as it happens.
- Logging time in five minute increments.
- Only time that is logged counts as work for the firm.
- An end of day summary sent by email never replaces this. The internal time tracking is the official record the firm uses.
What this role does not do
- Moving client files into the practice software. That sits with the preparer.
- Pricing, invoices, and engagement letters.
- Anyone's schedule, pay, or performance.
- Deciding what the firm charges. When a client says we made a mistake and your review shows the mistake is real, you can and should suggest that we reduce their charge.
- Admin work that helps build the firm. The role is narrowly focused on review and preparation for accounting and tax.
- Building client relationships.
- Working directly with the owner.
How we work together
- Your role is limited to tax and accounting preparation and review.
- You work with the Tax and Accounting Lead and the people the Tax and Accounting Lead assigns for you to review.
Software we use
- Canopy, for the client record, the review tasks, and time.
- ProConnect, where new returns are prepared and reviewed.
- UltraTax, for historical records only. No new return is done in it.
- AI, which the firm uses heavily and will show you how we use.
- A hosted remote desktop, which is how you reach the firm's systems.
- Google Workspace.
- Our internal site, for the SOPs.
- Zoom phone.
What we need from you
- Review expertise across 1040, 1120S, 1120C, 990, and 1065.
- Expertise with companies doing $0.5M to $5M in revenue. That is the size we serve.
- Experience giving a preparer feedback they can act on without a second conversation.
- Willingness to work inside our software rather than your own.
Pay
A flat fee, determined by MyCPE One.
Career growth
- You continue to grow as a Tax and Accounting Reviewer, within the skills that MyCPE One approves for you.
The technology you need to work here
The setup is the same for every role here. The technology you need to work here lists the computer, the internet, the power backup, the audio and the workspace.
