Managing Director
One opening.
Apply for this role. Reading the page is not applying. The application is the only way to be considered, and it is the whole first step.
Why this role exists
We need someone to oversee these items:
- This firm was an acquisition that needed a turnaround. The Interim CEO has done the heavy lifting of clearing out the old and putting in new people, new technology, and new systems.
- It is now time for a growth focused Managing Director to take the company into its next phase of growth.
- The Interim CEO has been Acting Managing Director and is looking for leadership for the next phase. She will step back to a board role, which is the role she is better at.
- The firm is moving toward advisory and fractional CFO work, and into a dental vertical.
- This role will help the business scale back up to $1M, and then grow past $5M.
Logistics
- Company stage: Small firm, growing, thin at the top. The Interim CEO was a Senior Manager in Accenture's Strategy and Operations practice, one level below Managing Director, and she is building a team to scale the firm.
- Start: As soon as possible.
- Location: Remote, hired from Eastern Europe. Croatia, Poland, North Macedonia, Serbia, and the wider Balkans.
- Shape: Your title is Interim Managing Director for the first six months, then Managing Director. During the interim you learn the business and own the net revenue target. After it, full profit and loss accountability is yours.
- Reports to: the Interim CEO, and to a quarterly board rhythm.
- Direct reports: The client facing Fractional CFO, the Head of Accounting and Tax, and the Operations Coordinator. The rest of the delivery team sits under them.
- Video: On, every internal meeting.
- Equipment: Yours. You will reach our systems through a remote desktop we set up.
- Contract: Contractor. The template agreement shows every term before you get to the end.
Work hours
- We work at the same hours most of the time, and some of the work is done asynchronously. You will not always have somebody online to ask, so you write things down and you keep going.
- Written, asynchronous communication is modeled as part of the company's culture. Things are read in writing before a live call is requested, and writing is used to prevent the need for calls.
- Full time is 7 am to 4 pm Austin time.
- That's 2 pm to 11 pm in Warsaw, Belgrade, and Skopje.
- Part time is four hours a day. Two of those four are 12 pm to 2 pm Austin time, which is 7 pm to 9 pm in Warsaw, Belgrade, and Skopje. The other two are yours to choose.
- Monday through Friday, year round.
- This is a full time role. You can start part time and move to full time. Within three months of starting you must be full time.
- The interim covers the busy season, because this is a cyclical business.
The technology you need to work here
The setup is the same for every role here. The technology you need to work here lists the computer, the internet, the power backup, the audio and the workspace.
Full time here
You are passionate about your work. Full time here means 8 to 10 hours a day, because you want to see things through to finished.
Who we want here
- Women. We want more of them here.
- Autistic people. The rules are written down. Nobody has to read a room.
- Direct communicators.
- People who think in systems. When something breaks, they look for what caused it instead of fixing only the part they can see.
- People who are optimistic about the outcome when they are under stress or facing a challenge.
- People who move fast and get a lot done.
- People who are all in.
- People who want the company to grow and are excited to help make that happen.
- People who, when they are stressed, notice what they are feeling, then say what they need and write it down. Stopping at the feeling, with nothing written down, is not a fit here.
Who should not apply
This is not the role for you if you:
- Wait for somebody else to pick a thing up, or need the work handed to you tidy and already decided.
- Report a problem and stop there.
- Try somebody once, get no answer, and give up.
- Go quiet when something needs raising, or find telling the truth consistently hard.
- Read hidden meanings and office politics instead of the plain words.
- Overstate what you can do, or are different before you are hired and after.
- Have changed jobs every year or two, or want short projects and a work whenever schedule.
How your results are measured
- Net revenue, yours from the first month. Full profit and loss accountability is yours after the interim.
- Culture, measured by whether people would recommend a friend to work here. Target average is 4 out of 5.
- The profit target, hit.
- The dental vertical rollout, mapped and executed rather than described.
- Monthly and quarterly reporting metrics, accurate and on time.
- The delivery team working to the agreed system.
- Promotions, pay rises, and warnings decided on numbers rather than on who spoke up loudest.
Role summary
You run the firm day to day and answer for what it earns.
What you own
Sales and net revenue
- You own the net revenue number from your first month.
- The offer already works. Recurring contracts sold to businesses, proven, handed to you rather than invented by you.
- The dental vertical is yours to map and roll out.
The team
- India: a Tax and Accounting Manager, two Tax and Accounting Senior Reviewers, one Accounting Senior Reviewer, and one part time Reviewer.
- Eastern Europe: the Operations Coordinator, the client facing Fractional CFO, and the Managing Director. Future sales and marketing hires go there too.
- United States: the Interim CEO.
- A hire in the US is justified only by a bottleneck that cannot be solved by hiring in India or the Balkans.
Data, reporting, and protection
- The client relationship system, the pipeline tracking, and the data systems.
- Metrics that are accurate on set dates, which the Interim CEO audits against agreed targets.
- Executing the data security plan across both regions, and recommending improvements to it, since you eventually inherit it.
How the first 90 days run, including what the Interim CEO keeps and what is held back during the interim.
What this role does not do
- Pivot the business model or change pricing without written sign off.
- Build software. The firm uses a mix of custom and off the shelf software to improve how the work gets done, and the Interim CEO builds the custom part. You direct the team to use it and say what it needs next.
The first six months
You run the firm from day one. Your title for those six months is Interim Managing Director, and it becomes Managing Director after them. Two decisions are shared for that period, and both become yours when it ends.
- You recommend a promotion, a pay change, or a termination, and the Interim CEO executes it.
- You run a hiring step first, the two of you discuss it, and the Interim CEO extends the offer.
How we work together
We move fast, and we do not do chaos. We do consistency. If something is off, we say it early. If you do not know, you ask once, then take a smart first try. If you make a promise, you follow through. And if it is not written down, it did not happen.
How we work at SMB
- Tell the truth early. If something is late, stuck, or going wrong, say it early and clearly.
- Raw numbers first. Never a narrative in place of the figure, and never a report moved to a later date.
- Be proactive.
- Keep records clean, so somebody else can pick them up.
- When you see a repeat problem, fix the system and write the SOP.
Software we use
- Canopy, for the client record, tasks, and billing.
- The firm's own operations software, which the Interim CEO builds.
- Zoom phone
- Google Workspace, for mail, chat, and documents.
- A hosted remote desktop, which is how you reach our systems.
- AI tools, every day.
What we need from you
Three industries fit, and any one of them is enough: management consulting, software, or outsourced CFO work.
- Winning and keeping clients is the skill that matters most. Sales or marketing, either one, as long as you can close on your own and not only with a team behind you.
- You have sold or renewed contracts that bill every month rather than one off projects, to US small businesses in the $500k to $5M range.
- Operations is the second. You have run a team with a number to hit, owning a product or a service line and answering for its margin.
- You do not need an accounting background. You need to understand the business and how to run it.
- You have managed people in two or more countries at the same time.
- You have reported to somebody in another country, so working across time zones is something you have already done.
- Ask you how something is going and you give me a number, not a feeling. And the reporting date does not move.
Pay
How pay works here. The parts, how each one grows, the coverage bonus and sales commission.
Career growth
- Tell us what you want over the next three years. We will help.
- Six month interim, then the permanent role with full profit and loss responsibility.
- You grow revenue, profit, the client base, and the size of the team.
Every step of our process, in order. Read it before you apply, so you know what is coming and when.
